 (i) Functions :

The Inspector General of Police, Forest Cell supervises the FMSs and co-ordinates with the agencies involved in the prevention of smuggling of forest produce, especially sandalwood, rosewood, teakwood, other valuable timber species.  They also supervise the investigation of offences under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. 

Forest Cell will take up investigation of cases referred by the Government, Director General and Inspector General of Police and the Director General of Police, CID, pertaining to offences under Forest Acts and Wild Life Protection Act.

(ii) Forest Mobile Squads (FMS) :

The function of the Forest Mobile Squads is to collect intelligence about forest offenders/offences and take effective legal action against offenders and prevent theft and smuggling of valuable forest produce, as per the provisions of the various Forest Acts.  They should also effectively implement the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The 18 FMSs across the state will maintain close liaison with the Forest Officers of the district, pay surprise visits to the Forest Check Posts in their jurisdiction, scrutinize the entries in the Check Post Registers. Irregularities and omissions shall be reported to the concerned Conservator of Forests or Deputy Conservator of Forests through the Forest Cell supervisory officers.
